SIZE - 11mm x 11mm SHAPE - Square                                                                                                                     THE STORY – ANDROCLUS & THE LION Also spelt ANDROCLES, is about a Roman slave, who may not have been entirely fctional, who lived about the time of the emperor Tiberius or Caligula. and became the hero of a story by Aulus Gellius. The story tells that Androcles had taken refuge from the cruelties of his master in a cave in Africa, when a lion entered the cave and showed him his swollen paw from which Androcles extracted a large thorn. Later, the grateful animal recognised him when Adrocles had been captured and thrown to the wild beasts in the circus and, instead of attacking him, began to caress him; both were set free. Androcles and the lion were then inseparable and when walking through the streets of town, Androcles was given money, the lion sprinkled with flowers and everyone who met them exclaimed: “This is the lion, a man’s friend; this is the man, a lion’s doctor”.
